October and November Bring New Labels and Returning Favorites

A fast approaching festive season and (fingers crossed) hopefully dryer days ahead in Bangkok means fresh seasonal menus, fun new concepts, and a bounty of new arrivals from both old and new world producers. Some of these winemakers bringing forth new labels to us here in Thailand, while others have labels we are simply excited to be able to stock our shelves with again. With everything from serious, classic wines made with low-intervention finesse throughout Austria, France, Germany, and the Greek Islands to some of the most important producers currently making wine and growing grapes in California.

Starting with our French arrivals, over the next two months we shall see new cuvees from predominantly Burgundy, the Loire, the Rhone, and the more modern (and modest) side of Bordeaux.

From Burgundy, both mineral masterminds behind the cellars of Domaine Thibert and Denogent present a slew of white wines all made from their sharp and precisely grown parcels of Chardonnay throughout the Macon and Pouilly Fuisse.

From the Loire, more arrivals from minimal-intervention minded Frantz Saumon with exciting and unique assemblages in the form of both sparkling and still. Frantz’s Rose makes its return along with newly minted Colombard and a juicy, crunchy Grolleau-Gamay.

As well, Lise & Bertrand Jousset of Montlouis-Sur-Loire continue to delight and entice with their wide array and shades of Chenin.

This includes perennial favorite Vilain P’tit Ch’nin, as well as a sleek and mineral Muscadet by the name of Voila!

With serious red wines of structure and texture to follow we must mention the Domaine Jean Royer of Chateauneuf de Pape and Chateau Clarisse of Puisseguin of St Emilion. Both houses offering up idyllic renditions of their regional specialties with dialed-in levels of finesse set alongside mindful winemaking practices. Make sure to check out the various large formats by Clarisse.

Going East to the mountains of Germany to the often less-regarded regions of Baden and Rheingau, winemakers Edel & Hanspeter Ziereisen and Peter Jakob Kuhn are make genre-defining wines that one might call future classics.

The Ziereisen cuvees span from highly accessible to deeply coveted, showcasing some of the more uniquely grown German grape varietals.

PJ Kuhn is regarded as one of the fresher faces in German Riesling, but has quickly cemented himself as one of the most important varietal crafters in the country. His Lenchen Kabinett is restocked amongst limited offerings of superb GG labelings.

Hailing from one of the most historically important winemaking countries on the planet, the wines of Greece are deeply varied and intrinsic to the small islands upon which they have been grown and cultivated for thousands of years. Now, and for quite some time, we have been able to support some of the most iconic and representative producers in Greek winemaking. Domaine Sclavos and Thymiopoulos are just some of these producers, making wines that are distinct to their terroir and historical origins from grapes like Xinomavro and Zakynthino.

Notably, this incredibly gastronomic and deeply umami rose of Xinomavro is restocked from Domaine Thymiopoulos and remains one of our consistently favorite wines vintage after vintage.

Floating over to newer world pastures, we have a few select arrivals from producers that we have been working with for quite some time, each year bringing an exciting arrangement of wines from both Australia and the United States.

From the Adelaide Hills, James Erskine’s winemaking endeavors are known throughout the global world of wine for introducing many to a fun, fresh, and juicy side of Australia’s natural winemaking scene. Jauma, their vineyards, and the growers they work with, are to thank for so much of the proliferation of the natural wine movement in Australia.

In fact, winemakers Mark and Alicia of Borachio cut their teeth working and learning with James and his partner Sophie, and their philosophy on winemaking is a definitive nod to their time spent with Jauma. Along with their Chardonnay, Mark and Alicia blessed us with a visit last year bringing with them their love of wine and a good time. Plus, we got to ferment wild indigo at Wonderfruit with Philip Huang and the help of this cuvee so it may or may not have magical powers (Not scientifically tested or proven).

Finally, with great pleasure and excitement we are able to announce the return of one of our long time favorite winemakers and good friend Rajat Parr. We are lucky to be receiving wine from not one but multiple of Raj’s projects including Domaine de la Cote, Sandhi, and the new to our shores Phelan Farms; a regenerative, permaculture wine farm owned and operated by Raj.

All of Rajat’s wines are made with maximum intention and minimal intervention as the former sommelier turned winemaker seeks to channel the best of California terroir and viticulture into his wines.

We are thrilled to be able to supply our thriving wine scene with exciting wines from both near and far. For more information about any of our wines or producers please don’t hesitate to reach out with any comments or inquiries. Do reach out please!

An Fall Full of Arrivals: August & September

Whether it’s the return of a perennial fan-favorite or a brand new cuvée from one of our producers, our August additions to the portfolio are sure to excite and amaze. You can expect a diverse array of whites and reds from Spain and Oceania, alongside a colorful assortment of German & French low-intervention wines, and robust Italian offerings from all throughout the Boot.

We’re always happy to see fresh-faced labels from some of our long-standing friends and winemakers, with new arrivals always comes a wider showcase of what our producers are capable of.

From the salty shores and rocky high hills of Spain, arrive new producers to our collection. Mineral-laden Alabarinos from the Galician cellars of Albamar and Fento, the former of the two recently featured and credentialed in this lovely piece of writing about the varietal itself.

From the Rioja, minimally intervened vino rojo in the form of Clos Ibai, a small batch production of whole-cluster Tempranillo aged for a year and a half in old French barrels.

These days, the arrival of Champagne is always a celebration. Especially when it’s a newfound producer to our portfolio. The estate of Arlaux has been making phenomenal champagnes in Montagne de Reims since the 1800’s; their ‘Grand Cuvee’ Premier Cru being an assemblage of the region’s varietal triumvirate with 3 years on the lees

The natural wines of the Loire Valley based Puzelat family are restocked with the return of the supremely elegant, herbaceous, and distinctively Loire ‘Pineau d’Aunis,’ along with a white blend from old-vine parcels, and everyone’s favorite Chenin Blanc, ‘Pineau de la Loire’

Further east, the renowned cellars of Domaine Tissot, nestled in the mountainous vineyards of Jura, have shared with us some incredibly special and always-coveted selections ranging from still, sparkling, oxidative to more.

Hailing from further south we have bold and textural wines from producers like Chateau Massereau, the standard bearers of mindfully made Bordeaux;

And the biodynamic, precision-driven cuvees of M. Chapoutier, including their legendary Hermitage Blanc ‘Chante Alouette’ as well as few mature Cote Rotie from the Northern Rhone.

Never a shortage of great German wines around our parts, we welcome back some of our favorites such as Weiser-Kunstler and Atlan & Artisan from the Mosel, Hofgut Falkenstein from the Saar, Enderle & Moll from Baden, and our friend Stefan Winter from the Rheinhessen.

Winemaking dream team and husband & wife, Konstantin and Alexandra of Weingut Weiser-Kunstler continue to dish up their sleek, tactile, and sultry wines from the vast slew of incredibly high-level, slate-rich vineyards that they work.

Their Rieslings have a foot decisively planted in the traditions of the Mosel while progressively innovating upon the terroir and stylistic creation that the region is known for.  Everything from their more straightforward, entry-level wines to the highest renditions of GG that they create are a delightful insight into Germany’s most famous grape.

Now if acid’s what you’re into, the cultish and collectible cuvees of Hofgut Falkenstein’s cool and composed Saar Rieslings coax the palate with herbal freshness, bright twangs of crisp fruit, and mineral, tingly phenolics balancing out the varying degrees of sweetness in their wines. Plus, they make a darn good Pinot (read as Spatburgunder) at that.

Taking a departure from the more traditional side of German winemaking and its vast swath of Rieslings, we find the philosophically natural-oriented cellars of Enderle & Moll in the regional nook of German viticulture known as Baden set along the Swiss border. Their wines rarely stray towards the realm of white, instead showcasing a dynamic range of skin-contact, orange, rosé, and red.

Floating down towards the Mediterranean, our Italian producers send us selections from the hills of Tuscany, natural wines from the coastal vineyards of Campania, and both frisky and formidable reds from Braida in the Piemonte and Lorenzo Begali in the Veneto.

Tuscany’s winemaking estates are often known not only for their vinous enterprises but also for running established agriturismos throughout the unmistakable rolling hills of the region. Corzano e Paterno’s production of wine, extra virgin olive oils, and cheeses are famous, so it is only fitting that their iconic ‘Terre di Corzano’ Chianti wine joins our ranks.

Cantina Giardino, a collective cohort of winemaking friends and compatriots have a knack for making some precocious and vividly natural wines from one of Italy’s most important agricultural epicenters. With everything from orange, rosé, petnat and amphora made wines, they are a selection not to be missed by the dedicated naturalists among us.

To finish with our friends (technically) closest to our warm and sunny shores, we have the classic Kiwi wines of Neudorf, as well as delicious offerings from the Australia’s Yarra Valley in New South Wales and the McLaren Vale in South Australia.

From Nelson, New Zealand, the wines of Neudorf are a distinctive standout in the scene; their samplings delving into something a bit more serious, as they’ve been making wine in the region since the 1970’s.

Our Australian arrivals mark the return of young gun Luke Lambert and his newly minted ‘Crudo’ Shiraz, a juicy, easy-going iteration of red to contrast with his serious, age worthy ‘Syrah’.

Going into September, our catalog of specific producers continues to grow even deeper and more expansive as exciting, new (to us) cuvees are ushered into Bangkok’s wine scene

From the French side, further additions of highly coveted, fully certified-biodynamic winemaking estates by the likes of De Sousa in Champagne, Michel Chapoutier in the Rhone, Valentin Zusslin in Alsace, and of course the iconic, alpine domaine of Stephane & Benedicte Tissot.

Some curious and highly contemplative wines from the Jura come in the form of Tissot’s fortified offerings that are highly traditional and autochonous to Jura’s winemaking vernacular. These examples are their Marcvin de Jura and a delicious Vin de Paille.

Macvin is a uniquely Jura wine specimen produced from a base spirit of Marc du Jura (a local brandy made from fermented grape musts) blended for 2 years with the juice of Chardonnay and Savagnin in barrel. Characteristic notes of toasted hazelnuts, poached pears, and grilled apricots balanced with a touch of residual acid and a welcome pithy biterness; a real regional treat!

The Vin de Paille, or directly translated as ‘Straw Wine’ as pictured above, is a fortified sweet wine made by first concentrating Trousseau, Poulsard, and Chardonnay for 4 months on straw mats before the wine is then pressed and aged in oak for 3 years. Perhaps one of the best examples of Vin de Paille available in the world.

To continue on our tour of biodynamics, Champagne De Sousa has been working their Cote des Blancs crus extensively with regenerative, low-intervention agriculture and thus producing some of the most impressive champagnes we’ve tasted from the region. Housed in Avize, this estates champagnes sees new arrivals to us here in Bangkok.

From Alsace, returning Grand Cru excellence from the multi-generational estate of Valentin Zusslin. Producing eaux de vie, sparkling, and still wines, these biodynamic-certified, classic Alsatian gems are a perfect complementary pairing to many of our regional fine dining options, particularly this elegant off-dry, picturesque Grand Cru Gewurztraminer.

Another exciting addition to the catalog joins us in the form of not grapes, but rather apples and pears! And only the finest at that, as Jerome Forget works old growth, organic orchards in the ancestral home of French cider, Normandy.

Joining our previously held label Fossey is a selection of further engaging perries and ciders called Vinot, Paysan, and Pear Shaped; each highlighting the distinctly fresh fruit that Jerome works with.

To finish, we’re invoking wine history with the recurring arrival of Georgian wines. These are serious, representative wines that are in effect the culmination of thousands of years of oenological techniques and societal importance. These are wines that taste the way winemaking might have in its origins.

All of John Okros and his sister’s wines are back in stock along with the new arrival of famed Georgian producer Pheasant’s Tears. Their cuvee Quinta is an assemblage of five unique Georgian grapes macerated for 5 days in ancient amphora also known as Qvevri.

As always, we’re thrilled to be able to share these incredible and exciting wines with you from all over the globe. If you have any questions, comments, or wish to find out more information about anything mentioned here, you can always reach out to us for advice or expertise. Cheers!

The Matthiasson Linda Vista 2021, Napa, CA

Steve and Jill leased the Linda Vista Chardonnay vineyard behind their house and started farming it in 2011. “We immediately converted it to organic farming and got busy re-invigorating the beautiful old vines. The West Oak Knoll area where we live is one of the classic Chardonnay spots in Napa, going back to the 60s, when the climate here was considered too cool for full-bodied reds. The cool winds and marine origin clay soils preserve zesty acidity and freshness, while the Napa sun provides richness and ripeness. Leasing the vineyard, taking it organic, and farming it ourselves gave us the control to feel comfortable producing a challenging and iconic variety like Chardonnay, where crafting “balance” means walking a razor’s edge in a genre with such iconic examples. The vines were originally planted in 1989 by Beringer, and we’re proud to take our turn caring for them as the vineyard reaches a true maturity.

For complexity, completeness, and balance, we achieve a diversity of ripeness by using the traditional method of harvesting the fruit a number of different times during the ripening period. The earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness. We gently whole cluster press all of the grapes, then ferment and age the wine sur lees in seasoned French oak barrels (no oak flavor), with only native yeast. No racking and minimal battonage (lees stirring) on only a few selected barrels. We allow two-fifths of the barrels to go through malo-lactic fermentation for complexity and balance. The vines were originally planted in 1989, and we’re proud to take our turn caring for them as the vineyard reaches a true maturity.

This modern day California Chardonnay has moderate alcohol and mouthwatering acidity that is a trade-mark of that vineyard, balanced by a riper luscious creaminess. The pH is 3.45, the TA is 7.2 g/l, and the alcohol only at ABV 12.5%.

“I like the crisp and easy sense to this chardonnay with a medium body, dried apple, nougat and hints of pear character. Hints of caramel and a delicious finish. Less heavy than many chards from the valley.” 93pts James Suckling

The wines that will be featured include:

  • Daniel Twardowski Ultra Tradition Brut NV, Mosel, Germany – “The grapes come from our own plots on the Dhroner Hofberg. The young wines of both vintages (15 and 16) spent 12 months in used barriques before undergoing a second fermentation together passed on the bottle. The result is bone dry and finalized without any dosage, hence the name. It’s exciting how this edition differs from the Brut Edition, even if it’s just 2 grams more dosage . Citrus, yellow plum, apple, spicy, with gripping acidity and fine perlage . It’s one of those wines that sticks in your memory for a long time.” – Daniel Twardowski
  • Daniel Twardowski Pinot Noix Ardoise 2017 3L Jeroboam, Mosel, Germany – “This Pinot Noir comes from our own plantations in the historical Grand Cru location Dhroner Hofberg, located in a cool side valley of the Moselle. “Ardoise” is our flagship, which we have been producing from our own plantations since 2011. The natural environment is reflected in the wine as an aromatic essence: smoky slate, coniferous wood, wild cherry, cool winds, supported by taut elegance.” – Daniel Twardowski
  • Daniel Twardowski Hofberg Reserve 2018 3L Jeroboam, Mosel, Germany“Smokey and earthy nose with lemon zest and paprika notes. Incredible interplay of dark minerality, concentrated fine tannins and delicate red-fruit character. Great brilliance at the very long finish. Almost supernatural vitality and fantastic aging potential”- James Suckling
  • Brash Higgins CBSV 2020, McLaren Vale, Australia“Winemaker Brad Hickey likes cabernet. “It’s nice to have a Cabernet”, says Hickey, “a guilty pleasure, a northern Californian style, per se, cabernet qualities, fuller flavoured, richer style. I like my Alice In Wonderland Zibbibo and frisky wines, but it’s great to have this in the mix too”.Very fragrant, plums, brined green olive, minty notes, cassis and lavender. Plush and so very supple in the palate, bright acidity perking up a lush flow of unctuous, dense, concentrated cassis, green herb and more olive character. Goes long, stains the palate gently, open weave, light web of tannins. Really delightful in its generosity and unashamed fuller flavour. Lovely.” – Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
  • Brash Higgins ZBO 2022, McLaren Vale, Australia“It’s not sickly sweet and overly perfumed as far as Zibibbo that spent 150 days on skins goes. This is a good thing. There are, however, sweet elements in the bouquet of lemon candy and fairy floss, but overall, it comes across as a more savoury style. Lemon myrtle, lime leaf, candied citrus peel and dried herbs, especially a lovely note of spearmint. Chalky, grapefruity texture with a gentle acidic lift and white pepper crunch. A bit of a watercolour finish, nevertheless tasty and refreshing.” – Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

Mosel Calling: Daniel Twardowski & Mirco Keller Collaborate for an evening of German Gastronomic Excellence

As a proper send off to next week’s long weekend, we’ll be inviting winemaker Daniel Twardowski and a lineup of his incredible Pinots to the tables of Keller next Thursday July 27th. A pairing of sublime, unique, and elevated German wines calls for cuisine that waltzes to the same tempo, thus Berlin-native Mirco Keller brings his suave, German-inspired, contemporary fine dining to help set the tone.

Mr. Twardowski has been making waves for quite some time now, his relentless pursuit and passion for producing Pinot Noir has elevated his wines and their demeanor to somewhat of a cult status. Ever the iconoclast, Daniel’s winemaking seeks not to reproduce or imitate but rather awaken a deeper under-standing of what his project in the Mosel means for the importance of German viticulture and as he calls it, the noble Pinot Noix grape.

Our guests can expect a veritable showcase of what modern German cuisine and winemaking has to offer and innovate, all set across the backdrop of Bangkok’s currently teeming food & wine scene. Keller’s innovative menu will be available with a la carte options alongside a selection of Daniel’s cuvées available by the glass or in the form of three 90ml pour flight set.

Wines that will be featured in the lineup include:

  • Daniel Twardowski 3rd 2019, Mosel, Germany “Fragrant red-cherry nose with delicate wild-strawberry and herbal notes. Very fine fruit and no less fine tannins that are beautifully matched. Long and filigree finish that has serious depth.” – James Suckling
  • Daniel Twardowski Pinot Noix Ardoise 2018, Mosel, Germany “A very delicate, subtle pinot noir with just a whiff of funk (reduction). For its sleek and cool style, this has impressive concentration and really fine tannins. Expands at the finish like a bandoneon, the tannic power gently building to a serious crescendo.” – James Suckling

Both food and wine are available as a la carte options with a special flight of Daniel’s wines available for 1800thb++. To reserve your seat, please reach out to https://www.kellerbangkok.com/reservations/ or call +66 64 839 5563. To get to Keller located in Baan Turtle view here.

Australia goes Issan! Brad Hickey of Brash Higgins Wine to takeover Zao on July 26th

No stranger to adventure, globe-trotting sommelier turned winemaker Brad Hickey of Brash Higgins will be touching down in Thailand next week. And what better way to show off Brad’s spectrometric assortment of wines than paired with the brightest and fieriest dishes from Bangkok’s favorite Ekamai-based Issan institution, Zao!

Intrepid and bold dishes make a home at Zao, as they serve up some of the purest distillations of Issan food and drink culture that we have the pleasure of finding further south here in Bangkok. Their food is unapologetically spicy, sour, funky, and deeply authentic, begging for wines with jovial sensibilities and structure to highlight everything on the plate from nuance to intensity. We’ve found a perfect match in Brash Higgins, whose wines are made under the same philosophy of non-conventional charm and creating engaging, downright fun flavors for all those willing to savor.

Expect to find exciting dishes like Laab with river snails paired with fresh, acid-driven Chenin Blanc; smokey, grilled Nam Tok Neua alongside spicy, amphora-raised Nero d’Avola; Yums with fresh watermelon dripping in salty, funky fish sauce & chilis to be slurped down with a glass of aromatic, skin-contact Zibbibo. Safe to say, there will be a mouthwatering myriad of flavors to dive into headfirst including a rare wine of Brad’s new to our neck of the woods.

These cuvées will be available both by the glass and as a flight of wines:

  • Brash Higgins CHN 2022, Chenin Blanc, McLaren Vale, Australia‘A pale straw in hue, the wine is heady with Chenin perfume of honey, straw, celery, real lemonade and water chestnut. Soft entry with trim acidity, the wine tightens as it flows across the tongue revealing a lick of saline and oyster shell. Good natural acidity with a delicate chalky, lemon pucker and notes of liquorice on the finish that pull you back for another look.’
  • Brash Higgins ZBO 2022, Zibbibo, McLaren Vale, Australia‘Cloudy and a diaphanous, pale copper in appearance. The wine is dry yet exudes tantalising herbal, spice and stone fruit aromas. Complex nose of apricot, graphite/pencil shavings, cut ginger, cloves, elderflower, white pepper, Belgian white ale, and wild honey leaps from the glass. On the palate, the wine has a soft entry but with good grip, an earthy sweet chalk/clay element with notes of lemon oil, tangerines, tea and cinnamon apples.’
  • Brash Higgins NDV 2020, Nero d’Avola, McLaren Vale, Australia“Dark ruby in colour, with hints of black cherry, Indian spices and stem ginger. Orange peel also present which is usual in this wine. Reminiscent of a Negroni cocktail, angostura bitters and all. A pomegranate, bright dark raspberry and morello cherry mid-palate balanced by a refreshing sweet and sour red cherry acidity. The wine finishes with fine grained, chain link tannins as well as some savouriness.”
  • Brash Higgins CBSV 2020, Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, Australia‘Perfumed nose; caraway seeds, floral, sweet mint, blueberries and cassis, with spicy notes of Earl Grey tea, and Dutch liquorice. On the palate the wine is smooth and rich with the sweet earthiness of roasted root vegetables, the acidity of rhubarb and the dark lusciousness of black currants. Layered and complex, the 2020 finishes with lovely sweet notes as well as that typical cabernet tannin keeping the wine taut.

All food and wines will be available a la carte with a special flight of all four of Brad’s wines for 900thb++ and the option of a pairing with two of Zao’s signature dishes for 1500thb++ altogether. Communal Wine Workshop II: Syrah vs Shiraz

This July 22nd, our portfolio manager, Ottara will be continuing his Cloud Wine workshop series with a communal exploration into the spicy world of Syrah.

At last month’s workshop, we saw wine lovers, aficionados and friends come together to chat Chenin Blanc and discover some new things about a classic varietal through the lens of a few of our favorite producers.

This month we follow suit, addressing the age-old question of Syrah vs Shiraz; taking a deep and vinous look at the history of the grape in France and Australia. We’ll talk about how the grape has manifested itself throughout time, how it’s changed and developed stylistically, and where exactly does it fit into the modern world of winemaking today.

This class is designed for all wine-minded folks from beginner to expert, but we find may it be more enjoyable if you already have a bit of basic knowledge coming into it. The spirit of this class is to stimulate conversation, engage about the wines, and hopefully make some new drinking buddies in the process.
